OPEN MIC – Serenity & The Double Yellow Line

OPEN MIC

Hi there!

My name is Corrie and I live in a little village near the bright lights of Manchester.

I’ve just joined the 30 club, recently bought a house with my wonderful partner and rescued a loveable dog called Daisy…..so basically life is all good!

Corrie

I am happiest when I’m:

Jet setting! –  My FT job allows me to travel the world so I count myself extremely lucky.

Baking! – My surname is Baker so it’s in my genes!

On the beach! – Life is sweet when there is sand between my toes and a sea breeze in my hair.

Most importantly I don’t take life too seriously and enjoy a good G&T whenever I can 🙂

DOUBLE YELLOW DAISY

SOURCE

I recently joined a Facebook page that is dedicated to the lovely little village I live in with my partner and pooch Daisy! The page is predominantly useful for updates on all things villagy such as recommendations for local gardeners, dates of the next farmers market, recent planning permission for a new pub…you know the score…

I was browsing through my Facebook feed yesterday when I came across a post from the  village page that really made me think about how we sometimes let negativity spiral out of control.

The post contained a picture of a car parked on double yellow lines on a side street in the centre of the village. Along with the image was a comment from a local resident angrily  protesting about how stupid and inconsiderate people are and what a disgrace the village is coming to. I continued to read the 13 or so other comments from residents which contained remarks such as “There are not enough PCSO’s dealing with these serious issues so I have called the police”, “I have called the council and was put on hold for 15 minutes, they said they were going to send someone to issue a ticket”, “It is really inconvenient to have to walk in the road when these stupid people park illegally”.

I am not usually one for commenting on or getting involved in debates on the internet (seriously who has the time?) but after 3 French Martini’s yesterday evening (hiccup!) I felt compelled to try and change the tone of the rant into a positive one!

I am a strong believer in negativity breeding negativity and effecting our lives in many ways, often without us realising it. Before you know it you are yelling at your partner for the tiniest thing, then when you take a step back and think to yourself “where the heck did that come from!”, your negativity has stemmed from something as tiny as a car parked on double yellows. If you don’t control it, negativity can suck the life out of your world.

My comment to my fellow villagers was therefore as follows:

“Parking on double yellow lines is one of life’s little niggles that no matter how much it annoys you, someone, somewhere is doing it right now. Given that it is an act that a majority of us have done in the past and will probably do again at some point in our lives, shouldn’t we all ask ourselves is it really worth wasting our time getting irritated by something we cannot change? In the grand scheme of things when there is enough negativity already in the world, is it really worth spreading this frustration onto our families, friends, colleagues? Maybe we should consider looking at this post in a different light?…….

How much time did it take you today to take this photo and post it on Facebook?

How much time has everyone taken reading it and posting a comment?

How much time have you spent talking about it to friends and family?

How much money did you spend ringing the police and the council?

Has your time and money been well spent?

I dare everyone to add up the amount of time they have spent on this post and use the same time tomorrow to create something positive;

Call an elderly relative

Play with your children for 10 minutes longer

Give your neighbour a lift somewhere

Buy your wife some flowers for the same price you spent on hold to the council.

Our time is precious so is it worth wasting it on breeding negativity?

I wasn’t overly bothered if my comment infuriated anyone, I was only interested in trying to turn a negative situation into a more positive one and if my thoughts had rubbed off on just one person it was time well spent.

For me – time spent reading and commenting on the post = 20 minutes. Today I will therefore be using this 20 minutes be giving my colleague a lift home so she doesn’t have to get a tram, two trains and bus home.

Best Regards

Corrie

Blogs I Love

blogs i love

Hi friends,

It’s been half term this week, so with both kids home & lots of play dates there’s been little time for writing.

Since I like to keep in touch with you all no matter what I thought I’d quickly write down a list of the blogs I read & share some love around.

I read all of my blog posts through Bloglovin’ a brilliant site you can download as an app on your phone.  It makes it really quick & easy to read the blogs you love wherever you are!

All of my posts go on Facebook or Twitter, if you’re not on either of these or find you’re missing my posts, you can follow them through Bloglovin’. Just search for Lizzie Somerset’s Blog!

I just counted & I follow a whopping 30 blogs!! I don’t always read every post from every blogger, there’s just not enough time in the day.  There are times when I’ve unfollowed blogs because they’re just not my cup of tea!

From time to time the one’s I do follow may write about things that just aren’t as interesting to me as other posts.  It’ll be the same for you on my blog too! Sometimes I’ll write about things you think are great, sometimes you might not be so interested in something I say! But that’s the great thing about blogging, there will always be inspiration out there, you just have to find it!

I’m going to cut it down to the blogs where I read most of the posts, because they’re just so good they seem to know what’s on my mind & speak right into that. Whether it’s about parenting, being enough, inspiration for my home/fashion, recipe’s or just beautiful lifestyle with fantastic photography. These blogs give me a lot of joy.

I’m also going to include my fave lifestyle & cookery blogs too, all of these blogs are written by women apart from one.

Cheers Y’all – Elise – Lifestyle, Fashion, Positive & Christian Motivation

A Brew of Blessings – Tara – Lifestyle, Home Décor, Fashion & Christian Thoughts

Levi’s Life Thoughts – Levi – Christian Thoughts

Sprinkle of Glitter – Louise – Lifestyle, Baby & Beauty

Carolina Charm – Christina – Lifestyle, Baking & Baby

A.Liz Adventures – April – Lifestyle, Fashion & Baby

Joy the Baker – Joy – Baking

Tanya Burr – Tanya – Beauty

The Small Things Blog – Kate – Hair, Beauty, Style & Baby

I hope you enjoy checking out these great blogs! I certainly take a lot of inspiration from each & every one.

You can now e-mail me on lizziesomerset@gmail.com I’d love to hear from ya! Or as always you can comment below, you know I appreciate all of your comments & for reading along.

Enjoy your Sunday.

Blessings as always!

It’s the Little Things – May Bank Holiday

imageHey friends,

Here are some snaps from the time we spent in the garden as a family this weekend.  We love bank holidays, to us they are perfect opportunities to have real family time together.  Weekends are often full of swimming lessons & Church.SH Train

sweet bea train Sweet Bea garden rolypoly

Both the sweet kids just love this Thomas the Tank Engine we got from a Table Top Sale.

We took advantage of this precious day off & played in the garden & had a barbeque!

Mr S having a well deserved beer!

I tried so hard to make homemade lamb burgers, but unfortunately I didn’t bind them together well enough & as Mr S tried to turn them they fell apart! We decided to cook them anyway in the frying pan & creatively I turned them into lamb hash.  That’s what life is all about, if life hands you lemons, make lemonade!

In other news I didn’t get shortlisted for the BIB awards, & I felt abit sad about that.  Then I got really excited about voting fot the amazing bloggers that did make the shortlist!

I was totally blown away to be nominated by the lovely & ever so encouraging Kathy at IB Designs Blog for not only the BIB awards in the Family category but also for the Team Member Readership Award!  Kathy has liked every single one of my posts since I started blogging in August, I have so appreciated her encouragement from across the pond!

Here are the rules:

  1. The Nominee of the Wonderful Team Membership Reader Award shall display the logo on his/her post/page and/or sidebar.
  2. The nominee shall nominate 14 readers they appreciate over a period of 7 days. This can be done at any rate during the week.
  3. The nominee shall name his or her Wonderful Team Member Readership Award Nominees on a post or on posts during the 7 day period
  4. The nominee shall make these rules or amended rules keeping to the spirit of the Wonderful Team Member Readership Award known to each reader he nominates.

wonderful team award

A great reader is……a person who really invests in & believes in the writer.

That’s my mid week friends! I’ll leave you with a precious photo of the sweet siblings, I hardly ever manage to get them together & I just love the look SH is giving SB! Sweet precious moments that are to be treasured.

Five on Friday – Petite Easter

09cc0-5onfriday-logooption1

Hey friends & how are we?

The Easter holidays are half way through & we are still in one piece in body, mind & soul, winning so far!!

Let’s get to it.

O N E – Pintetest is teeming with pastels/eggs/bunnies/food ideas for Easter with our littlies!

20140411-212639.jpg

I love looking through the pins but rarely do I actually want to do the crafts. I get tempted when I see the beautiful outcome but have you ever, ever used child friendly PVA? It sucks man, it Does. Not. Stick!! It doesn’t!

This makes crafting with a preschooler very stressful for this mama as Sweet Harry doesn’t have the patience yet to wait until all goes to plan & I don’t think super glue would be appropriate for a 3.5 year old!!

So when I saw this on another blog I had to try it. It turned out great!

eggs

Lunch. Check! Easter. Check! Easy. Check check check check check check! Ding ding ding, Winner!!! & NO glue.

T W O – Petite Success

I haven’t QUITE made it to my goal weight at Weight Watchers yet but I’m celebrating fitting into petite clothes. See my post HERE!

T H R E E – Being open about Anxiety

I’m telling ya, the more open you can be about your anxieties the easier life is.

I have witnessed this in my own life. I don’t think you necessarily have to shout about it on social media as I do. But I have noticed that in one-to-one conversations it really helps & people really are super nice & quick to put me at ease & offer solutions if necessary. Try it!

F O U R – BIB Awards 2014

BiBbigLogo2014a-600x600

If you would have said to me last year I would put myself forward for a blogging award, well I wouldn’t have believed you.

But here we are! The huge surprise when I started blogging wasn’t the confidence it helped bring out of me (although that is totally awesome) but the huge, extremely friendly & helpful blogging community. I’ve never known anything like it on social media. It’s a beautiful thing!

If you’d like to nominate me you can do so until tomorrow! HERE.

F I V E – S-ombré Hair

I had my hair done, at the hairdressers! What a treat.

I took inspiration from Pinterest & decided on an ombré look. Well more like s-ombré really!

Immediately afterwards I had to take Sweet Harry to his swimming lesson, not such sweet planning!

20140411-212619.jpg

I’m happy how it turned out! Ignore the grumpy SAHM tired look, check out the hair.

Do you have a blog & want to join the Five on Friday party? Just link up through one of these ladies & away you go.

Thanks as always to my lovely hosts!

April, Christina, Darci & Natasha.

Until the next time friends
Have a great day!

If you’d like to vote for me in any of these categories (or any of the others you feel my blog ‘fits’ into), I would be overjoyed! Many thanks to all who read & enjoy my little blog! I heart you all!!

It’s the Little Things – Petite Success

imageHey Friends,

Linking up once again on this lovely Wednesday (happy hump day!) with my hosts Jess & Ashley.

I am so close to my goal weight at Weight Watchers I can almost touch it, but then it slips slightly out of grasp again.  I just can’t quite get there.

I’d set myself a target to get to goal by my birthday, which has been & gone.

It’s hard sometimes not to get despondent when we don’t reach our goals, but I’m trying not to be too hard on myself.  It’s good to have goals, but sometimes they can change & shift.  The key is not to get bent out of shape about it, re-assess the goals & move on. New goal is to reach goal weight by the end of next term in time for Summer.

I’m still proud of my achievements & it’s good to congratulate yourselves on small goals you’ve achieved!

I now consider myself a petite!!! I’ve had to buy some new clothes as my old wardrobe is too big!  I’ve gone from a Size 14 to a Size 10.  Whereas before I was just short (I’m 4ft 11in), I am now petite & that is huge for me.  A girl who is short & wide is not going to fit into the petite range anywhere trust me!

So I’m celebrating the fact that although I’m still going up & down a bit, I’m fitting into Petite ranges at my favourite stores.

Topshop is my favourite, I just love the cutting edge style, but Next is good too! Both have really good home delivery service.

Check out my latest purchases!

1// Next Jumpsuit

2// Topshop Fringe Kimono

3// Topshop Leigh Jeans

4// Topshop Denim Dress

I can’t find the petite version on the denim dress on line, I got mine in the Bath store.

Here’s me in my new petite jumpsuit on a recent night out!

Love this new lease of life in the fashion department, see my post about my capsule wardrobe HERE.

I guess success can come in many different ways, be positive! Cheers!

With warm thanks to my hosts..

Until the next time
Have a great day!

Take a Moment

I’ve wanted for the longest time to have a name & structure for the posts which may seem like complete ramblings to some of you.

We all know where we are when I link up for ‘It’s the Little Things’ or ‘Five on Friday’ & these posts will continue. But when I want to write about something off the cuff, it can come across a bit like the blog has lost its way a little.

Let’s take it back to the bare bones.

The blog is here to encourage, to bring light, to inspire, to share our lives.

In order to do this I’m going to give my mind dumping a bit more of a schedule or format. Because that makes us feel warm & fuzzy inside & allows me to pass on the little gems that pass through my mind!

I’m hoping to put a linky up at some point in the future so all you lovely bloggers can link up your own gems to help or encourage others!!

Titled ‘Take a Moment’. It will be about anything that encourages in some way to pause, reflect, re-group & then move on with our day.

See you next week for that!

In the meantime call by tomorrow for ‘It’s the Little Things’.

See you then!

The Next Quarter

20140331-173158.jpg

Hey friends,

Woah it’s the end of March! Where’d that go!? It means the end of the first quarter of 2014, I know!

I hope you enjoyed reading about my small joys last week.

The new month also brings with it longer days, warmer weather (here’s hoping) & a new event to decorate the house for.

Yup, Easter 2014 is now fast approaching. Easter is by far my favourite religious holiday. First because it’s tells to gospel of Jesus, no longer the baby of Christmas but a perfect grown man & King who died for us all. A perfect man? I know!

Next, definitely secondary but still full of joy, everything pastel!!! Eggs, bunnies, Easter gardens, egg hunts, felt decorations & little chicks! All signifying the Hope in new life. The kids are going to LOVE it!

Love, love, love it all!!

I hope you’ll join me on the old bloggity blog, for Easter 2014!!

Warning: Pinterest will be used generously.

See you soon friends

Small Joys – ONE

Hey friends, as promised all this week I’m going to be publishing short, sharp posts about what’s been floating my boat this quarter!

Are y’all as happy as me Spring is just around the corner?  I can’t wait for the longer days.

At New Year I inferred this little blog might be getting a cute redesign, it’s still very much in the infancy stage but I am really enjoying searching Pinterest for any inspiration that I think suits my personality & what I want the blog to look like. It’s a way of getting across to my web techy friend what is in my head without trying to describe it & failing to get across what I mean.

It has to look like me, you know?

Have a look at my mood board so far. It’s all about colours & patterns, & I’m using anything & everything as inspiration. Tiles, art, design, home decor, nature & even wedding pins & other blogs too.

Feel free to send me any pins you think I might like, I’d love your input.

Have you ever had to design a website or blog? What did you look to for inspiration?

Until the next time friends
Have a great day!
